Elon Musk's Terafab and TSMC: A Chipmaking Colossus in the Making
Elon Musk is talking to TSMC about a dedicated chipmaking collaboration for Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, putting Intel's position in jeopardy....

Rumors are swirling across the hardware world, and honestly, I am not surprised by the latest headline. Elon Musk recently acknowledged that conversations are underway between his secretive semiconductor initiative, Terafab, and TSMC. The goal? A dedicated manufacturing facility engineered exclusively to pump out proprietary silicon for Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. When you consume silicon at the scale of these three juggernauts combined, relying on open-market allocation stops being a viable business strategy long ago. You stop renting capacity. You start building fortresses.
From what I can tell, details remain scarce, but industry leaks point toward a couple of distinct working models. The Under the first framework, TSMC would construct and run the foundry while Musk's entities inject capital and guarantee massive, predictable demand. Mainly, alternatively, a second rumored form would grant SpaceX majority control. Forcing the undisputed king of contract chipmaking to act as an working landlord and technology licensor. Not always. That second approach would (oddly enough) break TSMC's old playbook entirely. They prefer calling the shots, mainly when latest lithography nodes are on the line.

Meanwhile, what happens to Intel in all of this? Only recently, Intel looked positioned to anchor this entire venture by supplying its upcoming 1.4nm-class 14A process technology. But dragging TSMC into the inner sanctum changes the physics of the deal completely. TSMC brings its own world-class nodes, packaging wizardry, and an ironclad grip on global supply chains. If the Taiwanese foundry steps in to run the show, Intel's proprietary tech might quietly vanish from the blueprint altogether, leaving Pat Gelsinger's foundry team out in the cold.
We should all remember that these are merely preliminary discussions. Musk himself tweeted that it is just talk for now. On a related note, anyone who's watched this space knows how quickly grand architectural ambitions morph, stall, or disappear entirely. Utterly, yet, the underlying pressure driving the move is real. Vertical integration is the ultimate endgame for modern hardware empires, and whoever controls the foundry the future.
