OpenAI Is Sticking More Ads in ChatGPT, and the Enshittification Continues
OpenAI is rolling out sponsored product images in ChatGPT. Predictable, disappointing, and entirely unsurprising....
Remember when generative AI was supposed to usher in a golden age of productivity, completely free from the traditional baggage of the web? Yeah, me neither. OpenAI is sticking more ads in ChatGPT, expanding their monetization experiments from simple text banners straight into the visual generation pipeline. Starting later this month, US users asking the model to conjure up images might find a little sponsored product placement staring right back at them. It is the natural trajectory of venture-backed hyper-growth colliding with the brutal reality of server bills, but that doesn't make it any less depressing.
We crossed the Rubicon back in February when the first commercial experiments quietly landed in the chat interface. Now, they are tightening the screw. When you type a prompt, you aren't just a user anymore. You are inventory. The economic gravity of massive language models demands endless revenue extraction, transforming what once felt like a sci-fi utility into a glorified interactive billboard. Every single tech monopoly eventually follows this exact script. They give you the magic for free, they get you hooked, and then they monetize your attention.

What bothers me isn't necessarily the — and this matters — presence of commerce itself – software costs money to run — inference ain't cheap. When the answers you receive might be subtly influenced by who paid the highest bidder, this It's the slow, creeping degradation of trust that happens. Asking an AI to help me brainstorm a design or draft an setup. I want an objective review of the problem space, not a curated tip secretly greased by an advertising exchange. When commercial incentives corrupt the output, the tool ceases to be an intellectual amplifier and becomes a slick salesman — surprisingly enough.
Small teams and independent builders know that every feature decision tells you who the product actually serves. Right now, ChatGPT serves the balance sheet and the future IPO. Real engineering respects the person on the other side of the screen. Until we build or back tools that align completely with user utility rather than ad impressions, we are just leasing our digital workflows from landlords who want to plaster billboards on the living room walls.
