Many people are not able to connect to Spotify or discord, and it’s not really your fault or your Internet connection that is having a problem. Both Spotify and Discord said that they had problems on Tuesday afternoon. Weirdly, this was not a DNS or Amazon Web Services problem.

According to the Discord team, after they restarted the streaming service to fix one problem, they had a new issue that caused a failure of the API. At 2:39 PM Eastern Time, Spotify status tweeted that things are looking much better and they did see reports indicating that a lot of people are back online. This course status page also said that work has begun on restoring service. At 4:01 PM Eastern Time, Spotify was restored, tying the issues to a glitch with a malfunctioning Google Cloud component that they had to route around.
Spotify did not go ahead and share a lot of details about this, but the Google Cloud case study does confirm that Spotify is a customer, which really explains the sudden issues for both Discord and Spotify. There was a glitchy update to a traffic director component that this court cited, as well as a timeline that matched both service’s problematic period before it was rolled back to a working version. This time it was not Amazon Web Services or a DNS problem, it was just Google.
We're aware of an ongoing issue with HTTP 500 errors on Google Cloud Load Balancer. Our teams are investigating and updates are being posted on the Status Dashboard. → https://t.co/85DIWpwcHZ— Google Cloud (@googlecloud) March 8, 2022
