According to recent threat intelligence data from Proofpoint, a China-aligned hacking group known as TA419 has been running sophisticated social engineering campaigns, boldly impersonating actual Anthropic researchers and former White House science officials to infiltrate American policy circles.
The playbook relies on classic corporate deceit mixed with modern geopolitical paranoia. Targets at prominent think tanks, prestigious universities, and specialized law firms receive polite. Benign-sounding outreach about joining fictional advisory panels or contributing to high-level Senate reports. But once a dialogue is established, the attackers drop malware-laced documents straight into the thread, aiming directly at cloud credentials and proprietary research.
