Cloudflare Pushes Toward Quantum-Safe TLS Certificates
Cloudflare is laying the groundwork for quantum-safe TLS certificates, tackling a massive WebPKI overhaul before the math catches up....

Everyone loves talking about quantum computing like it is a distant sci-fi trope. Actually, the cryptographic reckoning is approaching fast. Now, right, Cloudflare is making a rare sensible noise in a tech field dominated by vapid hype: they are planning to issue quantum-safe TLS certificates. It is a bold infrastructural bet.
If you just swap out today's algorithms for raw post-quantum math, the modern web breaks entirely. Standard cryptographic signatures balloon in size, adding punishing weight to every single TLS handshake and choking bandwidth until servers grind to a halt. You cannot simply patch this with duct tape.

Solving this requires deep, grueling systems engineering across browsers, operating systems, and root programs. By acquiring a trusted root from CA GlobalSign and leaning into hybrid Merkle Tree Certificates, Cloudflare is attempting a systemic migration that will take years to fully realize in the wild.
We need more of this unglamorous, foundational heavy lifting and a lot less speculative vaporware. Fixing the plumbing of the internet before it bursts is the only kind of progress that actually matters to builders who care about craft.
