Instagram will now start scanning your face

Instagram just began testing a new age verification method that includes asking your followers to vouch for your age, and even using artificial intelligence that will estimate your age via a video selfie. This is part of a new push that ensures users match at least the minimum age requirements for signing up to Instagram and making sure that teens and adults are in the right experience for their age group. For the social vouching system, Instagram will start asking free mutual followers of any user to confirm their age, and these followers must be at least 18 and a half three days to respond to the request. Users can verify their age with ID card pictures as well.

The AI-powered on Instagram requires you to take a video selfie, which the company then sends to a different company called Yoti. Yoti’s Facial recognition technology then estimates your age based on your facial features and shares that estimate with Instagram. According to Instagram, they delete the photo after it’s sent back with the data, and the technology can also not recognize your identity, but only your age.

This system is going to be controversial, as users distrust Facebook and Instagram with their data to start with, and aged recognition AI has always had higher errors depending on your gender, age range, and skin tone.

This system from Yoti is currently already being used by the UK and German governments to detect age using deep learning after being trained on hundreds of thousands of pictures. Much like a lot of other neural networks, this AI also works a lot like a black box, according to co-founder Robin Tombs so even though the company does not themselves know which facial characters the AI uses, the company has a YouTube demo where they apply makeup to young users to see if their system can correctly detect their ages, which it can.

Instagram says that they aim to use this AI for understanding people’s ages, preventing teens from accessing Facebook, dating adults from messaging teens, and Helping teens by not letting them receive restricted ad content.
