Parental Controls for Instagram JUST ARRIVED in the US

The parental controls that Instagram announced in December are now launching today in the United States. Adam Mosseri says that this is the first set of parental controls that will allow parents and guardians to view and set limits on the amount of time their teens are spending on Instagram.

These controls are being introduced after Instagram was under fire for the impact they have on the younger demographic. A lot of leaked internal research from the company suggests that Instagram usage was detrimental to the mental health of the younger users, particularly teenage girls. After this research was made public, Instagram announced that they were posing work on a version of Instagram that was aimed at children (Under the age of 13, which was even worse than detrimental) They did roll out a feature encouraging users to take a break from the app after set periods.

Right now, Instagram says that teens themselves will have to initiate the supervision feature from the app on mobile devices, but in June The company is rolling out the ability for parents and guardians to start the process. A lot of other features like being able to add specific times when the teenager can use Instagram are also on the way.

Meta is also introducing new parental controls for their Quest VR headsets, as from next month, Guardians will be able to log specific apps to prevent teenagers from accessing agent appropriate content. Then, in May, children between the ages of 13 and 17 will be blocked from downloading age-inappropriate apps from the Quest store

These supervision tools are launching in the United States today, but Adam Moserri says that they will be rolling out these features globally in the coming months.
