Sonos sued Google, Google could get banned

Nearly two years ago, Sonos sued Google over a patent infringement including Google’s speaker tech. Yesterday, the US International Trade Commission went in favor of Sonos. They imposed an import ban on several of Google’s hardware products. These hardware products include the Nest, the Pixel phones, and the Google Home.a

Google rolled out many different software changes and tweaks that violated the patent. Google believes that these software changes won’t impact the ability to import and sell their products.

What happened?

Sonos came up with their multi-room tech. Allowing many speakers throughout the place to communicate with each other intelligently and be centrally controlled via any device. They claimed that Google took snippets of tech after a partnership back in 2013. Five patents were alleged to have been infringed upon.

How this affects you

The import ban proposed by the ITC is for Google hardware products being imported into the US. They gave Google 60 days to comply or they will be banned. What this means is it’s very unlikely that Google will be banned for this as they’ve complied. But as they complied with these laws, They had to trade off some features which made their products extra smart (which was not a choice)

Google implemented some of the workarounds for volume adjustment in their speakers, If you own smart home devices and speakers, You will now have to adjust individual volumes for all the different units in a speaker group. Although you can use voice commands to make it work.

It is kind of sad for the people who did own these Google devices, As you won’t get the Multiroom technology that you could before. If multi-room technology is what you’re looking for, you can still go with Sonos products. Their products are pretty good. But this lawsuit won’t affect you if you don’t already own any device linked with Google Smart speakers. It’s a really lucky time. If you were already looking for a smart speaker setup.
