Apple is expanding iPhone capabilities with the introduction of Messages via Satellite, set to launch with iOS 18. Initially featured in Emergency SOS on the iPhone 14, this functionality will now extend to general messaging when users are outside cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. Users will receive alerts prompting them to switch to satellite communications for sending iMessage or SMS messages.
To initiate a satellite connection, users can access a new connection assistant from the Dynamic Island or navigate to Settings or Control Center. The process involves aligning the iPhone towards an overhead satellite, with visual cues provided to optimize connectivity.
Messages sent over satellite are limited to texts, emojis, and tapback reactions due to the challenge of compressing larger data like images or videos for transmission. While iMessage benefits from end-to-end encryption, SMS functionality is also supported, though without read receipts over satellite.
Currently, Apple offers this service free of charge for iPhone 14 and newer models. However, details on pricing post-trial period haven’t been disclosed yet. Users receive a complimentary satellite service trial lasting up to three years from their iPhone purchase date, with the exact duration contingent upon purchase timing.
As iOS 18 approaches its fall release, more updates on Messages via Satellite and related costs are anticipated, with Apple expected to clarify further during the rollout.
