Elon Musk is now making a “Moderation Council” for Twitter.

Even though Elon Musk now owns Twitter, the firm is not ready to make any immediate changes to its content policies. According to Musk, the social network would create a council for moderation that will include people with “widely diverse perspectives.” The entrepreneur claims that until that council meets, there won’t be any “big” content judgments or ban reversals.

Musk hasn’t announced the council’s members or given a timeframe for its formation. We’ve enquired with Twitter to see if it can comment on the approach or offer further information, and we’ll let you know if we hear back. The CEO of Tesla has committed to significantly alter Twitter’s moderation strategy, including loosening the general guidelines and restricting permanent bans on individuals like Donald Trump. The council’s intentions, though, imply that Musk might need some time to put a new strategy into practise and might even delegate some of the duty. Recently, he made an effort to ensure advertisers that Twitter wouldn’t turn into a “free-for-all hellscape” where adverts appeared next to graphic content.

This is not to argue that Musk is delaying making snap judgments. Several officials, like Vijaya Gadde, director of policy, have already been let go by him. Musk apparently told the rank-and-file personnel that he wouldn’t be firing as many people as anticipated, but it’s still assumed that he will do it soon. It is rumoured that Tesla engineers are assisting with a code review that could result in technological changes.

Critics will be keeping a close eye on the council if and when it does come. Longtime critics of Twitter’s censorship of right-wing ideas have even gone so far as to push for state legislation requiring social media platforms to offer more content. Others, however, have disputed the assertions and said that strict moderation is required to stop hate speech and false information from spreading.
