Amidst all the controversy, Instagram is currently facing the backlash for “attempting to become TikTok” and CEO Mark Zuckerberg noting that the volume of recommended content is set to double over the next year while also backpedaling on their new change for the full-screen algorithm recommendation-based feed, they have not been out of the news this week and now they still want to stay on the spotlight by knowing more about the experience of marginalized communities on the app.
Instagram now says that they need to gain a fuller understanding of the different kinds of experiences people can have on the platform, they say they need more demographic information according to an Instagram blog post, “If we don’t know people’s race or ethnicity, we’re limited in our ability to assess how our products impact different communities,”
From today and over the next few months, Instagram will start asking some users in the US to share their information about themselves, and their ethnicity, and this survey is optional and not everyone will be seeing it. Instagram says that taking part in the survey will not change anything about how you use the platform like the reach of your posts or anything else it’s just a survey they want to conduct to understand the experience different kinds of people have on the platform. Instagram is not hosting the survey themselves as a research and polling company YouGov will be collecting the data, encrypting the deidentified responses, and splitting the information between several research institutions. Instagram just wants aggregated data in the end, and neither Instagram nor their research partners will be able to link responses to individual users as YouGov will also delete the responses after 30 days, and the research partners will do so on request.
