Police say a person used in Apple Airtag to stock a victim in Montgomery County, The latest incident in a disturbing nationwide trend of criminals utilizing the popular tracking device. On Friday at 8:44 PM, the victim told the police that they just returned to their home in Lower Providence after visiting the movie Tavern and Upper Providence Township when they received a message on their iPhone from Apple.

The message stated, “Unknown Accessory Detected – This Item Has Been Moving With You For A While.” When the victim went inside of their home, they looked at their phone again and received another message that read. “Safety Alert, Your Current Location Can Be Seen By The Owner Of This Item. You May Be Carrying This Item, Or It Could Be Located Closely. If This Item Is Not Familiar To You, You Can Disable It And Stop Sharing Your Location.”

The victim then also received a map of the area showing that at 7:19 PM that night, that device was activated near the movie Tavern and then traveled with the victim until they returned to their home at 8:38 PM. The victim also then looked out of their front window and spotted an unknown vehicle setting just down the roadway outside the home when the victim approached the vehicle, it slowly drove away.

The police described the vehicle as an older model. Light Gray or silver hatchback, possibly a Subaru. Investigators later determined that an Apple Airtag was used on the victim’s vehicle. Apple’s tracking devices were created by Apple last year or are normally the size of a quarter. The devices are a relatively inexpensive and popular way for Apple users to keep track of their belongings, such as keys and wallets, law enforcement officials say criminals are now using the device to stock victims or track vehicles they want to steal.

The battery life of an Apple Airtag can last more than a year, which makes it an even better option for anyone who would like to stock their victim or just steal something. Apple mistakenly just created something really scary. But also they gave the tools for not using it the way a user should not do.

Well, if you feel like you are being tracked by an Apple Airtag, Here’s what you can do.

  1. Don’t go home.
  2. Apple’s air tag device product Page says that it is designed to discourage unwanted tracking, So that means when your iPhone is in your pocket and notices an Apple Airtag, just moving around with you that isn’t yours, It will notify you.
  3. If the iPhone does not detect it, the Airtag will also eventually make noises.
  4. If you own an Android device, You can install an app by Apple called Device Tracker. You can use this app to stay safe. This Android app can ping you at any moment if it also detects any kind of Airtag that’s traveling with you. (You cannot use Airtags with this app. )
