Instagram will soon let users mute specific topics with keywords

In response to criticism about the app’s strong tilt toward recommendations, Instagram is giving users more options to modify their suggested posts. The app is now testing a new feature that will let users mute specific topics from appearing in suggested messages using keywords and emoji.

With the change, posts containing a user’s keywords—which can include emoji as well as words and phrases—in the caption or hashtag of a post will be blocked. In a blog post, Instagram states that users can “use this tool to cease seeing stuff that’s not interesting to them.” From the app’s settings, users can modify their filter words. The business points out that customers have the option to completely ignore all recommendations. Additionally, Instagram is trying a new method of removing irrelevant posts from the Explore section of the app. Users can now choose numerous posts at once and designate them all as “not interested” thanks to the modification. According to the business, this will prohibit future recommendations for content comparable to those posts.

Both of the new alternatives require a little extra work, but they may provide some relief for users who have grown weary of Instagram’s suggestions due to the app’s strong efforts to resemble TikTok. Adam Mosseri, the company’s chief executive, announced last month that Instagram would reduce the quantity of suggested posts and stop its full-screen feed experiment. Both moves have received a great deal of backlash, which has given rise to famous memes decrying the company’s imitation of TikTok. Despite the criticism, Meta’s founders have made it clear that they want to replace the majority of friend content in Facebook and Instagram’s feeds with more posts based on AI-driven recommendations.
