Instagram just introduced a new Map feature to compete with Google Maps

The new map function on Instagram just got a lot more useful as Instagram now supports searches and filters, allowing users to look up restaurants, attractions, and other hotspots directly through the Instagram app rather than simply viewing where a photo was posted. The updated map will also feature posts, stories, and guides tagged by users, which will offer a glimpse into the local scene wherever you search. This is very similar to what Snapchat offers with the Snap map & Public Stories.

The map supports hashtag searches and offers the ability to explore by tapping tab locations in the feed or stories. You can also type the name of an establishment, city, or neighborhood directly into the Explorer page and see results on the map. It will also allow users to save their searches in a collection and share locations with other users as well.

Using location stickers on posts and stories will add that content to the search results on the new map as long as your profile is public. Visually, this map features Instagram icons where the attractions are allowing searchers to tap and see stories or visit the profile pages of businesses they find interesting.

With this, we see another step from the Instagram plan to become a one-stop shop for social networking, commerce, traveling, and life in general. For instance, earlier in July, Instagram rolled out a new feature that would give users the ability to buy things directly on the chat, which would make it a lot easier for users to simply stay on Instagram rather than opening up Google Maps or Venmo.
