Bungie, the developer behind Destiny, is now a part of Sony’s universe. Sony Interactive Entertainment officially has closed on a $3.6 billion deal today to buy the independent game studio publisher Bungie. According to both Bungie and PlayStation Studios with this acquisition, Bungie will still maintain creative control over their operations and independently develop their games as leaders from both companies have now noted, since the deal was announced back in January. So basically, Bungie will still be considered an independent subsidiary of Sony and won’t be required to make any current or future games exclusive to PlayStation consoles.

Sony is now hoping Bungie’s expertise with games like Destiny will help them expand their line of service game offerings as they plan to spend 55 percent of Playstation’s budget on live service games by 2025. And that is probably the biggest reason for this acquisition as they could get a lot of talent and help with their upcoming service.
After acquiring Bungie, Sony is still not done with it as they are now finalizing a deal to acquire Montreal-based Haven Studios, which is working on a multiplayer title game for PlayStation. Sony is still not done with gobbling up many great independent publishers out there, as they even plan to acquire more studios over the next few years in a bid to grow their live service and PC offerings. It seems like the gaming landscape is slowly starting to change into a very major heated rivalry between Microsoft and Sony, two very big corporate giants.
