TikTok is now working on features to protect teens

TikTok previously said that they were working on new ways to age, restrict certain types of content on the social media platform trying to ramp up their safety features for teens, and now the company is starting to share more about their rating system, which is called content levels planning to be rolled out in the coming weeks for the safety of teens in the platform.

The company says its approach is very similar to the rating systems used by movies and the video game industry. They say that it is meant to filter out videos with more mature themes on the feeds of their teen users. The platform will start applying this filter to videos that won’t otherwise break the company’s rules, but may be inappropriate for many younger users that are currently on the app.

With this change, teens between the age of 13 and 17, will see a notice that the video is age restricted when they come across some video. The company did not go ahead and share how they will determine these maturity scores or what criteria they will use to classify these videos. Tiktok did note that this feature is still an early version and they do plan to add additional capabilities in the future. In the meantime, the company’s also adding a new update to filter out unwanted topics from the “For you” page as this new update will enable users to mute certain words or hashtags they don’t want to watch videos.
