Google is now publicly pressuring Apple to adopt RCS

Since the start of this year, Google has always tried to publicly pressure Apple into adopting the GSMA’s RCS messaging protocol. They’ve done this because they don’t want Android users facing pressure from iPhone users. After all, Apple users use iMessage and see green bubbles pop up and they think it’s disgusting using this new RCS technology would result in Apple not being able to put in green bubbles for Android, they’re using stigma to not let iPhone users switch to Android.

The Android Twitter account shared an unofficial lyric explainer video for “Texts Go Green”, a song from Drake’s latest album. When the song Drake refers to what happens when an iPhone user blocks someone from contacting them through iMessage and then the service defaults to SMS and the blacklisted individual loses all the benefits of iMessage including reading receipts.

Even though Google did say the song was real, Bangor on the tweet did say that the phenomenon of green text bubbles is pretty rough for both non-iPhone users and anyone who gets blocked. They went on to say, “If only some super talented engineering team at Apple would fix this because this is a problem only Apple can fix. They just have to adopt RCS.” The irony of Google’s video is that it doesn’t accurately explain the meaning of the song “Texts go green” iMessage’s incompatibility with RCS is comfort for Drake in the song. Well, whatever it takes to make Apple adopt RCS, right? I have a pretty strong feeling the Government might just get involved with this
