Apple just extended the update deadline to delete outdated apps

Apple just send notices to some indie developers a while back warning them that their apps would be pulled away from the App Store if they were not updated within 30 days. Apple has had this policy since 2016, but this move suggests that they are now actually, rigorously enforcing that rule. Some recipients of this letter criticized the policy as they said that it was a barrier to indie developers, and it is very hard to keep up with the platform changes and how much work it takes to roll out even a minor update.

The company says that they only send removal notices to developers whose apps haven’t been updated in three years, as well as developers whose apps haven’t been downloaded at all or extremely few times during a rolling 12-month period. Saying that dropping outdated apps makes newer ones more discoverable and ensures users enjoy games and tools that are optimized for the latest hardware Apple provides.

Also, Apple is kind of right with this one as a lot of older apps don’t work as well on the latest generation of phones, which does throw a lot of shade at Apple as users just think these apps won’t support their devices and it still is a bad thing because 30 days isn’t enough for a smaller developer to conjure up an update.

Well, Apple saw people were sad about this and they just extended their grace period, giving them up to 90 days to update their applications as users will now get to keep apps that are already installed on their devices, even if they end up being deleted from the App Store.
