Google ads are about to get a lot less annoying for a lot of people, as today the company is updating their sensitive categories on user ad controls. The list has been updated with parenting and pregnancy, weight loss, and dating. Users will now be able to restrict advertisements from these categories on both YouTube and Google, and although these filters won’t work on Google search results right now, the company will incorporate this feature in the future.

Targeted ads have gained a lot of skeptics because they are particularly very intrusive and harmful for a lot of users out there. Google already blocked targeted ads for people below the age of 18, and in 2020 they also allowed users to limit how many ads they would encounter on the topics of gambling or alcohol. Considering the very big scale of the online ad tech market, it currently holds, Google’s decision allows people to save themselves from harm by coming across them less often.
