Instagram has quietly bumped up the minimum daily time limit for users, need more ad revenue?



According to many reports, Instagram is nudging some users to increase their daily time limit to at least 30 minutes. According to many sources, people were being asked to set a new daily time limit but they could retain their existing setting if they wanted to, the daily time limits are changing as part of an app update, a pop-up read the Instagram app now offers a minimum time limit of 30 minutes (It previously used to be 10 to 15 minutes)

Users can choose any time limit in increments of five minutes. When the user reaches their time limit in both apps a notification pops up to tell them that they should leave the app, but there is a very Big Blue button that allows them to continue using the app. Meter said that this was to give people control over the time they spent on the apps, to increase conversations at the time they rolled out this feature, they said this feature was for healthy online habits in November. Instagram also started testing the “take a break” feature For users to be more conscious about their time (Mostly Teens)

It’s still unclear why Instagram has taken this step to increase the minimum daily time limit, and it’s really easy to see why. Facebook’s daily users have dropped for the first time in the last quarter from the time they started. Along with this, user growth across all of the apps Meta owns, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp almost stayed the same. This is not a good sign for their growth, and it could mean that they will be plummeting in the future ahead, And to prevent that, they need to get ahold of the existing users and remind them how long they spend in the app is not Great as it decreases ad viewership (Which causes monetary loss for them)

All of this is happening because they expect slower revenue growth this year due to more competition for people’s time and users paying more attention to features that generate less revenue like reels. Increasing the time limit and keeping users scrolling through Instagram and viewing ads for a longer time could be a great way for them to counterbalance the revenue concerns that they could have in the future.
