BlackBerry phones will remain dead. In 2020, we reported on OnwardMobility, a startup that licensed the BlackBerry brand for smartphones and planned to release a new QWERTY Android phone. There was a lot to worry about when the company missed its promised 2021 deadline, and just last month, it had to make a blog post titled “Contrary to popular belief, we are not dead.”
According to an article that we wrote a while back saying that Apple and BlackBerry are going to be dead, we did say that a company called onward mobility, a startup that licenses the BlackBerry brand for smartphones. They plan to release a new QWERTY keyboard on Android phones. But there was a lot to worry about as Last month, they had to make a blog post expressing that they were not dead, yet.
According to many different sources, BlackBerry is looking to further distance itself from its days as a smartphone vendor after selling the remainder of its mobile patent portfolio for $600 million earlier this month. BlackBerry previously sold its mobile and messaging patents to a company called Catapult IP Innovations (A company that does not have any products) They also took on a ton of debt to buy the patents. If they plan to monetize blackberries patterns by suing potential infringers, it’s understandable that BlackBerry wouldn’t want them to distance themselves from year-long courtroom battles that will soon begin
BlackBerry did get out of the smartphone market back in 2016 after they lost the bet on the farm on the Android-powered BlackBerry Priv and lost. Onward mobility did seem like a company that could deliver on its promises because of a partnership with Foxconn’s FIH Mobile smartphone operation. They did say that the phone they were making was coming in 2021, and the website that they made was claimed several days into 2022 they finally added a blog post to the site Saying that the device was not dead yet.
And as this company has lost the BlackBerry license, they are now shutting down and their website now says That they are now leaving the smartphone space. The best thing they could ever do was quit the smartphone market forever, or maybe not, they could make a comeback. We never know.
