This is very great news for do-it-yourself enthusiasts and manufacturers. As with two weeks to go before their February 25th release date, Valve has already published CAD files for the steamed exterior shell to GitHub. They made it available under a Creative Commons license and also said that this release is good news for DIY enthusiasts (We possibly speculate that they do know that these files will be used by other companies to make shells, Cases, and accessories, which in turn increase the Publicity of the product itself)
Valves’ decision here is an interesting one as it does suggest that the company will be allowing case makers to freely make aftermarket shells for the steam deck. Valve also went on to say that they are looking forward to seeing what the community does create with this shell file. It’s certainly very different from the approach that Sony has taken with their PlayStation 5 (As you know that did sue DBrand for copying their outer shells)
While Valve is making their shell files publicly available, Sony has gone on to create first-party shells for their own products themselves and SUING everyone involved in the process of making shells or cases for the PS5.
