Well, Western Digital says that they have lost at least 6.5 exabytes Of flash storage due to contamination issues at their production facilities. This contamination could lead to the price increase of NAND (The main component of an SSD) The prices could spike up to 10% Which is Very bad considering the bad months the PC market has faced due to global chip shortages and demand for GPUs rising.
The contamination of materials used in the manufacturing process has been detected in late January at two plants in Japan with Western Digital’s joint venture partner Kioxia (Previously Toshiba)
This partnership between Western Digital and Kioxia Is nearly 30% of the entire market, Both Western Digital and Kioxia supply the primary SSD and EMMC storage drives for PC’s in the entire market. Western Digital is also one of the leading suppliers in the industry. (I just found out that my PC drives are made by Western Digital and Toshiba, Probably yours too, so it is an indicator of how they lead the entire market)
It’s still not clear what caused this contamination, or if the products in the market Will be recalled or not, and when the new production lineup will begin. WD said they’re working very closely with their joint venture partner to implement necessary measures that will restore the facilities to normal operational status as quickly as possible.
