Chip shortages and covert again haunting China smartphone market now

Chinese domestic smartphone shipments recovered from the Hit that they took from the COVID-19 pandemic. The smartphone industry has been constrained for many different reasons for a while now, Reasons as the global silicon shortage, The global semiconductor shortage due to disruption from COVID outbreaks in China. (Honestly, this is pretty scary & I don’t like where this is going)

Well, domestic smartphone shipments did total 342.8 million in 2021, up to 15% year on year, according to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. We saw great growth compared to 2020 because of, you guessed it, COVID.

Still, 2021 smartphone shipment figures are below the three 71.7 million units shipped in 2019, which really shows how much the industry has been affected by this. The smartphone industry did face a number of issues in 2021, Perhaps holding the market back from reaching levels higher than what it was before the pandemic. Also, as part of China’s new so-called “Xero COVID” policy, China has been also putting many areas into lockdown So that they can decrease the spread of outbreaks throughout the year. This is also another reason for the shortage.

Also, consumers are keeping their devices longer and the stop-start of COVID waves is also keeping consumer spending and shopping patterns clearly low. There’s also a decrease in the percentage of people going out and buying new devices. Also in turn decreasing the total number of yearly shipments.

Despite all of this. many companies like apple retook the top spot as the world’s largest smartphone player with a 22% market share thanks to the new strong demand for the iPhone 13. It’s not just Apple though, Samsung comes right behind Apple at 20% of the market share. Of course, these two are the main players in the entire industry.
