Apple Takes On Password Managers with Dedicated Passwords App

Move over, 1Password and LastPass, because Apple is reportedly building its own password management app directly into iPhones and Macs.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple will unveil the new app, simply called “Passwords,” at its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10th. This app will directly compete with existing third-party password managers that typically charge users a monthly subscription fee for generating and storing unique passwords.

Apple already offers password generation and storage through iCloud Keychain, a feature that syncs your passwords across all your Apple devices and even Windows PCs through a browser extension. However, passwords stored in iCloud Keychain are currently hidden within the Settings app, making them inconvenient to access and manage.

A dedicated Passwords app on Apple devices would not only address this ease-of-use issue but also provide users with another reason to stay within the Apple ecosystem.

Much like its competitors, Apple’s Passwords app will reportedly categorize passwords, including accounts, Wi-Fi networks, and even Passkeys (which Apple recently introduced). The app will also allow users to import passwords from existing password managers and automatically fill them in when logging into websites or apps. Additionally, Passwords will be compatible with Apple’s $4,000 Vision Pro headset and support two-factor verification codes, similar to Google Authenticator and Authy.

One remaining question is whether the Passwords app will allow users to securely store files and images alongside passwords, a feature currently offered by both 1Password and LastPass.

Apple’s Passwords app is just one of the many announcements expected at the upcoming Developers Conference. The company is also anticipated to unveil the next iterations of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, WatchOS, and VisionOS, all rumored to be infused with new AI features.
