You can now play Half Life 2 in Virtual Reality

You can now relive the seminal 2004 predecessor of Half-Life if Half-Life: Alyx left you itching to do so. Half-Life 2: VR Mod was made available on Friday by the Source VR Mod Team, a group of fans. You can play the mod for free on Steam as long as you possess the original. The mod enables you to complete the single-player campaign of Half-Life 2 while it is still in public beta. A few Half-Life: Alyx features were incorporated by the Source VR Mod Team to update the experience and make it compatible with VR. For instance, the same selection grid from Valve’s 2020 is used when switching between weapons.

Additional VR-focused improvements include the addition of optional laser sights, over-the-shoulder ammunition storage, manual reloading, and two-handed weapon control. Even room-scale movement is supported. The Source VR Mod Team claims that the project isn’t complete, but that hasn’t prevented people from enjoying the game, as evidenced by the Overwhelmingly Positive rating it now has after 732 reviews.

Half-Life 2: VR Mod has been a long time coming, much like Black Mesa before it. The project was initially mentioned in 2017, and according to Eurogamer, it went through a horrendous development period before resurfacing in 2021. It’s because of a recent surge of new team members that “revitalised” development that you can play it right now.
