Uber users can now get rides in fully electric cars

Users may now request rides in fully electric cars including the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, and Ford Mustang Mach-E thanks to Uber’s “nationwide” expansion of its Comfort Electric service to 24 US cities. Vancouver, British Columbia, which has the highest rate of sales of zero-emission automobiles in North America, was added to the expansion. In various cities, Comfort Electric debuted in May of last year as a component of the Uber Comfort service. By paying a 20–40% more over Uber X journeys, riders can select additional legroom and other high-end options. The Uber Green service, which charges drivers more for electrified vehicles, is distinct from this one. The only difference between Comfort Electric and Uber Green is that the former accepts both EVs and hybrids.

With more than 25,000 drivers renting a Tesla, Uber said that its collaboration with Hertz “helped pave the ground for the expansion of Comfort Electric.” Hertz claimed it would order 100,000 Teslas last year and, shortly after, said it would make up to 50,000 of those cars exclusively available for rent to US-based Uber ridesharing drivers. The number of cities where the service is now offered has increased from the previous 11 to include Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore-Maryland, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Connecticut, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New Jersey, NYC Suburbs, Philadelphia, Portland, Sacramento, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Vancouver (Canada), and Washington, DC.

The expansion appears to be a modest step toward Uber’s ambition to operate an emissions-free business in the US and Canada by 2030. By 2025, it has committed to investing $800 million to assist drivers in making the switch to all-electric vehicles. By 2030, California will mandate that all ride-hailing services be electric only, and other states like New York also intend to outlaw the sale of gas-powered vehicles.
