Google is taking the ultra-confusing route with rebranding Duo

Google is now going ahead to move forward with their merger of Duo and Google Meet, This merger is not the best transition, as the rebrand is not going quite as elegantly as some people might like for it to be as Google is rebranding Duo for Android and iOS as the Google Meet app [with the same Google video calling centric logo] Even though the company had already migrated many of Google meets features, the old meet app isn’t going away as it will be rebranded as “Google Meet Original”.

Although users will be seeing this new rebrand by September and you will have to use your Google account for any meeting features, familiar events like contacts and Effects will remain intact. The original Google Meet app will continue to work, but won’t get ad hoc calling and will eventually disappear. According to a Google spokesperson, this new merger will help adapt to the evolving needs of video calling, including meetings, providing a better and more unified experience. Also with this, the company does kind of acknowledge that their communication app mix had grown too complex and they needed to merge it all and make it a lot simpler for themselves and the users as well.

The company is also planning to shut down Hangouts this fall to focus on Google Chat, the company also dropped Allo in early 2019. Even though the old Google meets existence would be very confusing for a lot of users, it will be soon clear as to which Google Apps you should use for work meetings or keeping up with friends.
