Apple is now limiting iOS 16’s iMessage unsend and edit message features to protect users

Apple is now decreasing functionalities that users previously get with iOS 16’s iMessage edit and unsend features as the company has released the 4th developer betas of iOS 16, iPad OS 16, and Mac OS Ventura. With these new developer betas, we can now see that the company will limit you to only 5 edits for a given message within the available 15 minutes, shrinking the unsend window from 15 minutes to just two minutes.

Users will now also be able to tap a message to see its edit history, as previously users would only see a notice that it had been edited. The company did not explain more about why they made this decision. However, the potential for abuse of this new feature would be very bad, and someone could like edit a message to make it appear that you agreed to something, although they could alternately harass you by sending messages that last long enough to be noticed, this appeared before you can preserve the evidence.

If you would like, you can always prevent edits and unsend by disabling iMessage. It will force conversations to SMS texts where those features are not available. Also, you would probably be moving into green bubble space if you would like to. Although Apple’s new moves won’t completely prevent you from having any kind of harassment, it might encourage you to leave iMessage on without fear that someone could easily twist your conversations.
