Meta just provided some hefty financial support to the Oversight Board

Meta is now very committed to keeping its Oversight Board running by providing ongoing financial support. The company has now pledged to fund the board’s operations with the contribution of an additional $150 million. The company previously embarked $130 million for the Board’s trust when it was set up back in 2019.

The board says this money is irrevocable under the terms of the trust and can only be used to fund, manage and oversee their operations. According to the Oversight Board Trust chairperson Stephen Neal, “By making this ongoing financial commitment, Meta has issued a vote of confidence in the work of the board and its efforts to apply Facebook and Instagram content standards in a manner that protects freedom of expression and pertinent human rights standards,”

The Oversight Board reviews certain content moderation decisions made by Facebook and Instagram, providing recommendations to the parent company through the lens of human rights standards. It also assesses the company policies and how it enforces them. The board says that they have received more than a million appeals from users against moderation decisions.

The board started making decisions on cases starting from January 2021, and it wasn’t very long before a very major case dropped into its lap as Meta decided to suspend Doland Trump indefinitely from their platforms after the events of January 6th, 2021. The board ultimately determined that Meta was justified in blocking Trump, but argued that it’s the reasoning for an indefinite ban meant that suspending Trump’s foreign indeterminate period was not within the company’s remit. This is why the company had to limit the suspension to only 2 years.

The Oversight Board has always had an impact on other moderation decisions, metal takes, and policies to the point where the company said that they could not keep up with all the recommendations.
