Twitter just laid off 30% of their hiring team

Twitter just laid off many employees for the uncertainty around the acquisition by Elon Musk as the company caught nearly 30% of its talent acquisition team, including recruiters and others charged with bringing on new hires. According to the Wall Street Journal, Twitter told that fewer than 100 people were let go and that it was only the talent acquisition team that was affected by this change.

We knew something would probably change as the company had previously already announced a hiring freeze as part of a broader attempt to cut costs as they attempted to finalize their Elon Musk acquisition. But currently, it seems like the status of this deal is uncertain as Elon Musk is threatening to pull out of the agreement, citing concerns about the number of bots on the platform and other issues. The subject of layoffs did come up during a recent Twitter all-hands with Musk. Elon Musk did say that he was concerned about the costs at Twitter but did not answer directly the question about whether job cuts were a possibility shortly.

According to a LinkedIn post by Ingrid Johnson, who was a senior technical recruiter at Twitter. She wrote, “It was a very tough day. If Twitter has chosen to spend potential billions suing Elon and maintaining a falsely inflated stock price at the expense of the people who gave their lives building the company— that is an even more tragic story.” Also, Twitter is not the only tech company to pull back on hiring or lay off employees, as Meta recently also said that they would slow down their hiring as they faced more serious times. Other companies including Netflix, Unity, Coinbase, and PayPal, have also cut down jobs.
