At the Microsoft developer conference. The company doesn’t normally unveil new hardware, but at the 2022 event, the company did unveil Project Volterra. It’s a PC Microsoft designed to help developers bring Native ARM apps employing AI accelerated workloads.

Well, we don’t have a lot of details about this project just yet, but we do know that this is going to be featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset with a dedicated neural processing unit, or NPU, the component is going to be delivering the best in class AI, computing capacity and efficiency too.
Well, a neural processor is not something you would typically see on PCs as these chips are normally a lot more common in phones which help save battery power by taking machine learning tasks from the CPU. But considering the NPU market has flamed up in the PC segment as Apple unveiled it with their M1, chip said they are making the same move because they want to be prepared for the change in the industry.

With Volterra, Microsoft is also adding Windows support for NPUs. The company also said development tools like Visual Studio Code 2022 and Windows Terminal will soon run natively on ARM hardware. All of that suggests that the company is working and very keen to get developers to program native ARM apps.
