Apple’s communication safety and messages feature is designed to automatically blur images that contain nudity sent to children using the company’s messaging service iMessage. They launched this feature in the United States last year and the feature is now coming to the messaging apps on iOS, iPad OS, and Mac OS for users in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. The timing for the release of this feature is unclear.

Scanning of images happens on the device and does not really impact the end-to-end encryption of messages. The opt-in feature scans incoming and outgoing pictures for sexually explicit material to protect children and if any images are found the image will be blurred and guidance is provided for finding help alongside reassurances that it’s OK not to view the image and to leave the conversation.
Very similar to how this feature works in the US, children will have the option to message any adult they trust about the flagged photo.
