Instagram says it’ll stop supporting the IGTV app

Instagram has just announced that they are no longer going to be supporting the standalone IGTV app. On a blog post, they said they would instead focus on keeping all videos on the main Instagram app.

Instagram said that they are getting rid of the IG TV app as they want to make video content as simple as possible to discover and create. That same blog post also says that any videos on the main Instagram app will have a full-screen viewer and tap to mute and that Instagram is also working on a consistent way to share many different types of videos, like Reels and the existing IGTV.

This standalone IGTV app was released in 2018 and they meant for it to go against YouTube by acting as a place to post long-form vertical videos, But after a while later they removed the IGTV button from the dock on the bottom part of the Instagram app And that marked Instagrams loss of interest in IGTV being a competitor to YouTube in the long run.

As the IGTV app is going away, the instream ads that were inserted into videos over a minute long have also gone, and Instagram has also made it very clear that they still intend to focus heavily on video. But it seems that Instagram is working very hard to make Reels a competitor to TikTok. While they increase the ads on Reels, it will make up for IGTV being gone.
