Amazon will soon start storing stuff at police stations

Amazon lockers are already intended to deter package thieves, but some may soon feature an additional security measure. The first US city to test out Amazon lockers at police stations is Washington, DC. The lockers were set up this week at two locations throughout the city by the Metropolitan Police Department. If the trial programme is successful, the department and Amazon intend to install lockers at more stations, according to Washingtonian.

On the surface, it makes sense to frustrate porch pirates. Nobody would probably attempt to steal a parcel from a police station. Amazon already has a number of connections to law enforcement. The firm has handed police footage from Ring cameras at least 11 times without a court order or user authorization, it was discovered earlier this summer. For a while, Amazon’s facial recognition technology was also usable by law police. In 2020, the business prohibited the use of Rekognition by law enforcement; last year, it extended the prohibition indefinitely.
